The natural harbour of Bahía de Acapulco (
Acapulco Bay)
is the city's centrepiece. Acapulco was from the sixteenth century one of
Mexico's most important ports, the destination of the
famous Nao de China, which brought silks and spices from Manila and returned laden with payment in Mexican silver.
Over the years, this resort has grown into a city and is now home to a population of more than one
million people.
The stunning natural harbour in Acapulco is the focus of the resort and the nearby pacific coast beaches are also
very popular among sun bathers, who enjoy the clear blue sea and perfect sunny weather, year round.
This lively and beautiful port city has for decades been one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico,
especially among the rich and famous.
Acapulco hasn't got much of monument, historic buildings, etc, but what it
has going for it is some of the best bars and night clubs all over the resort. At night Acapulco rouses itself
from the day's torpor and prepares for the long hours ahead. Eating out is one of the city's great pleasures.
In addition to the showy places, there are plenty of good no-frills, down-home joints that take you to the real
Mexico. Acapulco's nightlife is
also legendary, with new and ever more spectacular dance clubs constantly opening.
